Currency

As with the whole of Germany, the local currency within the city of Lubeck is now the Euro, which was introduced in 2002 and replaced the unified Deutsche Mark, which in turn replaced the East German Mark in Eastern Germany in 1990.

Payment for goods and services can usually be made by both credit and debit cards, although if in any doubt, do check first.

Language, Dialect and German Phrases

Locals in Lubeck speak German, a language with a strong regional accent and a number of words that are surprisingly similar to those in English. At times this can make basic communication possible with the people of Lubeck, even if you only have a basic grasp of the language. However, in some situations, such as shopping or eating at a restaurant, a German phrasebook often proves essential. Here is a taster of some useful German phrases.
