Lubeck is graced by many historic churches, the most impressive of which is Lubeck Cathedral, better known as simply the 'Dom'. Boasting medieval architecture at its finest, this magnificent Lutheran cathedral is built with red bricks and has become an iconic structure within the city, famous for its twin towers.

St. Mary's Church is also especially notable and features classical architecture and towering spires. Lubeck's main churches are below.

Lubeck Cathedral dates back to the latter part of the 12th century and was finally completed some 60 years later. Following the devastating bombing raid in 1942, the cathedral suffered significant damage, along with much of the city. The sympathetic reconstruction work finished in 1982 and inside, the cathedral is fortunate to still contain many of its original features, including a 17-metre / 56-foot crucifix and many ornate stained-glass windows. Unusually, Lubeck Cathedral is not the tallest church in the city.

A magnificent basilica and one of the biggest churches in the whole country, St. Mary's Church dominates this part of Lubeck with its huge towers, which are more than 120 metres / 394 feet high. Known locally as St. Marien Kirche, construction of St. Mary's Church began in the mid-13th century and lasted almost 100 years. The church offers regular services, popular organ recitals and the world's highest brick vault.
